Crystal Palace Bamboo Crochet
Hook size H and a smaller hook for working in the
loose ends
(Note for knitters: For an I-cord strap you will need double pointed
knitting needles US size 9)
Gauge: stitches and rows = 1
inch
The stitches used:
slip stitch
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
Dec = Decrease: Work the final 2 sc together. Pull one loop through stitch
(2 loops on hook), pull one loop through next stitch, Yarn Over, pull
through all 3 loops on hook (decrease made)
Pattern:
Base: Color A:
Chain: 25 (24 chains for the base + ch 1 to turn)
Row 1: sc1 in 2nd chain from hook, sc in each ch across - work in back
loops only for this row (24 sc made)
Row 2: ch1 to turn, sc1 in each sc across with final sc worked in top
of turning chain of previous row
Repeat Row 2 until piece measures 2 ½” long.
Body: (worked in the round)
Row 1: Color A ch2 to turn, sc1 in each sc of previous row (24sc),
then work sc along short side of base (12sc), along 2nd long side (24sc) and
along 2nd short-side (12sc), slip stitch to turning chain of this row
Row 2: Color A ch2 but do not turn, sc1 in each sc across the long side
(24sc front of bag) switch to Color B and sc1 in each sc all the way around,
slip stitch to beginning chain of this row
Row 3: Color B ch2 to turn, sc1 in each sc below that was worked in
color B, switch to Color A, sc1 in each sc below that was worked in color A,
slip stitch to turning chain of this row.
Row 4: Color A ch2 to turn, sc1 in each sc below that was worked in
color A, switch to Color B, sc1 in each sc below that was worked in color B,
slip stitch to turning chain of this row.
Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until bag is 5” tall. End with Row 3, then make
draw string holes as follows: put a marker 15 color B stitches from slip
stitch/chain join to mark where second set of holes should start.
Drawstring Row 1: Color A ch2
to turn, sc1 in each sc below that was worked in color A, switch to Color B,
sc1 in next 2 sc, ch1, skip next sc, sc1 in next 7 sc, ch1, skip next sc,
sc1 in next 3 sc, ch1 skip next sc, sc1 in each sc across until you reach
your marker (15 stitches from end of row), ch1 skip next sc, sc1 in next 3
sc, ch1 skip next sc, sc1 in next 7 sc, ch1 skip next sc, sc next 2 sc, slip
stitch to turning chain of this row.
Drawstring Row 2: Color B ch2
to turn, sc1 in each stitch (sc and chain spaces) below that was worked in
B, switch to Color A, sc1 in each sc below that was worked in color A, slip
stitch to turning chain of this row
Final round: Repeat Row 4,
then bind off.
Color B only for all remaining rows
Flap Row 1: start 12 stitches from end just bound off, ch2 to begin,
sc1 in each sc across long side (24sc made).
Flap Row 2: ch1 to turn, sc1 in each sc across, final sc worked in
top of beginning chain of previous row.
Repeat Row 2 until flap measures 2” long. Then begin decreasing.
Flap Decrease Row 1: ch1 to turn, sc1 in each sc across until there are
only 2 sc left to work. Work Decrease.
Flap Decrease Row 2: ch1 to turn, sc1 in top of Decrease stitch, sc1 in
each sc across until there are only 2 sc left to work. Work Decrease.
Repeat Flap Decrease Row 2 until only 5 sc remain (6 stitches counting
turning chain)
Buttonhole Row: ch2 to turn, sc1 in next sc, ch3, skip next sc, sc1 in
next sc, sc1 in top of turning chain of previous row.
Final Row: ch2 to turn, sc1 in next sc, sc 3 in chain space (button
hole), sc1 in next sc, sc1 in top of turning chain of previous row
To make the strap:
Crochet strap: Make a chain the desired length (plus an inch or so
for 2 knots). Then either sc1 in each ch, or work as in pattern: sc1 in 3rd
chain from hook, * ch1, skip next ch and sc1 in ch after that.
Repeat * to the end.
Or knit an I-cord strap: Cast
on 3. *Slide the stitches down to the opposite point and knit 3 * Repeat
until strap is desired length.
Thread strap through draw string holes, secure ends with knots just inside
the bag at front. Strap will be outside along the short sides and emerge at
the back of the bag.
Sew button on the front panel. Work in all loose ends and
you are good to go!
